Fight Franchise’s Dan Cotter caught up with former WBA light welterweight world champion Gavin Rees, who is super confident ahead of his campaign in this Friday’s Prizefighter light-welterweight series.
With Prizefighter coming up this week how has training been going?
Its being going good, I’ve been sparring both Tony Docherty and Bradley (Pryce) couldn’t have gone better if I’m being honest.
You have Ted Bami first in the tournament, how do you rate him as an opponent?
He will be certainly looking for the big punch against me. Though I’m already looking forward to the final anyway.
Who do you expect you will meet in the final then?
It will be between the winner of David Barnes and Colin Lynes, definitely.
Its a good line-up this year, what do you think of the Prizefighter format?
Its not to bad, the winner seems to usually go on and get a title shot. It’s my sort of style to be honest, I’ve said that from the start, so I should be in good shape to win it.
With being the former WBA titlist, Amir Khan fights Dmitry Salita this weekend, how do you see the fight going?
Salita has an undefeaten record thats been patted from in his own country. I expect Khan to win on points over the 12 rounds.
Do you see yourself returning to that level? Maybe even a Khan fight somewhere down the line?
I want to come back down to lightweight and get a fight done with John Murray, would be a cracking fight!
What do you think of the other contestants? It’s potentially the strongest line up this year?
My side (In reference to the quarter and semi final draw) is the easier side with the likes of Young Mutley, Colin Lynes and David Barnes being on the other. Again i expect the winner of Lynes v Barnes to face me in the final.
Effectively if you are to reach the final it’s only a 9 round fight should be an easier night?
Yes, im usually adapted to going twelve so shouldn’t be a problem going 9 rounds with intervals as well.
Thank you very much Gavin for your time and all the best of luck from the Fight Franchise.
