Re: Roy jones jr
Tough one. I dont think Roy will be judged as one of the greats for a decade or two. Fans currently remember him losing most of his last few fights. Possibly unfair on Jones but it has happened to other fighters.
If he had retired after the Ruiz fight, his legacy would've looked amazing.

Why would they? Roy Jones resume is not strong enough to make that claim.

Definitely one of the greats but by continuing to fight on and the manner of his defeats to much lesser capable fighters has damaged his legacy. Rather than quit after his win over Ruiz I would rather have seen him stay at heavyweight or try and win the cruiserweight title and definite;y have a rematch with Toney. However, it has all gone worng by trying to force himeslef back down to light heavy.
In years to come he will be considered a great but because he will not be fully appreciated until he has gone from the sport for time being he would be considered a modern great

It would have been better if he had fought some of the tougher opposition available to him when he was in his prime but I think he has 2 go down as an ATG,I like the story about Ali coming to see him when he was training for a fight and engaging in a mock sparring session and Ali started to take the piss out RJJ about the flaw in his Jab and RJJ said it didnt matter because he was so fast,His unorthodox style was a joy to watch in his prime but to see him in the RJJ/Hopkins fight wasnt great

His place in history belongs right next to James Toney and behind Bernard Hopkins. Depending on where you rate them, that should tell you how much of an ATG he is.
Of the 3 Bernard was the least talented but made use of his abilities much more than the rest did. Roy wasted his talent on scrubs, Toney wasted it on McDonalds.

Certainly one of the most talented of the current era. Though I think he was too willing to carry his non deserving mandatory challengers.

True, there were probably better fights out there from a fan's perspective... but a decade ago and before, it was all about the number of title defenses a fighter had, forget who they were against. Now with the prominence of the P4P imaginary title it's about the best vs the best a little more. Not that the fights happen, but fans prefer a boxer for who he fights instead of how long he holds a strap.
There's still nothing like watching Roy in his prime! A rare talent indeed
