The boxing bin man from Leicester returns this weekend for his 6th defence of his
European super bantamweight title and WBC final eliminator. Yes this can only mean
Rendall Munroe is back in action this week.
Munroe, who has high hopes of becoming a world champion, first has to face Simone “Boom Boom” Maludrottu at the Harvey Hadden Centre in Nottingham.
Maludrottu may be recognised by some boxing fans, as the person who squandered Ian Napa’s first time around hopes of a European title at bantamweight.
Maludrottu, hailing from Sardegna, Italy has faced some good opposition in his time as a professional and at the start of 2008 was competeting for Hozumi Hasegawa’s WBC bantamweight title. However the Italian was unable to beat the long time reigning champion losing a unanimous decision. Maludrottu was also the long reigning champion of the European belt at bantamweight making nine defences of his title.
Rendall Munroe has undoubedlty found his comfortable weight at super bantam. His
only loss in his career came to Andy Morris in 2006 for the British featherweight
title, where Munroe lost a unanimous decision. Since then after winning the British
super bantamweight title against Marc Callaghan, forcing him to retire on his stool
in the 6th. Everything has been up for the boxing bin man, defeating Kiko Martinez
and Isaac Nettey a few months ago.
The undercard includes Prizefighter cruiserweight winner Ovil McKenzie against an opponent TBA. Unbeaten lightweight John Watson from Liverpool faces Youssef Al Hamidi, heavyweight action is also billed Larry Olybamiwo v Yavor Marinchev. Tom Dallas, Tony Jeffries and possibly David price have also been billed again their fighters are to be announced.
Maludrottu has said in the run up to the fight that "Munroe is just a stepping stone to another world title fight, this time against WBC super-bantamweight title holder Toshiaki Nishioka,". Nishioka will be the prize that awaits for the winner of the bout.
With both fighters having KO ratio’s less than half I see the fight being a highly contested boxing match that will ultimately end up on the cards. Both fighters are currently unbeaten at the super bantamweight. Ultimately it is a tough one to pick out of the two, but I see Munroe nicking a hard and well earned decision and start his path on the world title scene.
All the action can be seen live on Sky Sports1 and HD1 in the U.K from 9:30pm.
