Anthony Mundine 38-3 (23) beat yet another Australian today when out pointing Robert
Medley 27-3 (17) for the pretty much unheard of WBA International middleweight title
in Sydney.
Some reports coming from Australia report that Medley was unlucky to drop the decision while others claim that Mundine was in control throughout the bout.
The judges all scored for Mundine by scores of 117-113, 117-112 and 117-115 showing that the judges obviously scored quite a few rounds even. As ever, Mundine who isn’t short of a word or two thought that the scorecards were not wide enough.
“I knew I was the superior fighter, I don’t know that the judges were doing. He never hurt me, I wanted to knock him out, but he showed his fitness and preparation” stated Mundine.
The bout was originally scheduled for the light middleweight division which Mundine had never before campaigned at but was switched to middleweight last week after Mundine complained about the officials although Medley’s camp complained that Mundine couldn’t make the 154lb limit.
Mundine who is now unbeaten in 15 since losing to Mikkel Kessler in 2005 will face yet another fellow Australian in his next bout. Former professional rugby player Garth Wood 7-1 (3) won the Australian super middleweight Contender series on the undercard with a 7 round split decision win and his prize for winning is a bout against fellow former rugby pro Mundine.
