Lee McAllister 31-2 (7) last night retained his Commonwealth lightweight with a truly forgettable win on points over Ghanaian Sam Amoako 6-1 (2) (or 20-1 (10) according to Sky TV).

McAllister and Amoako set the tone of the fight from the first round. McAllister looked to jab and move throwing the odd potshot while Amoako trundled after him with little desire to let his hands go. Amoako did show the odd stiff jab but it was slow and inconsistent. For the first five or six rounds it seemed that McAllister was just a couple of levels above Amoako and the difference in foot and hand speed was very noticeable.

However after the midway stage, McAllister seemed to go to sleep. Amoako started to throw a few more punches and he started to close the points gap. Amoako landed a decent hook in the eighth and it seemed that McAllister was starting to run out of ideas. Amoako though never showed the real desire needed to rip the title away and McAllister seemed to regain the initiative in the final two rounds.

The three judges scored the bout 116-112 and 117-112 (twice) for the champion.

To make up for the poor main event, there was a cracking little fight on the undercard. Davey Savage jnr. 10-0 (2) won the Scottish super bantamweight title on points over Gavin Reid 6-5-1 (3).

Reid came forward from the start throwing lots of punches, especially to the body but Savage used his greater boxing ability to win the round. Savage probably took the second and third as well although the super fit Reid was still coming forward. Reid came into the fight more in the next couple and landed some good shots in the fifth and started the sixth well although Savage came on at the end of the round.

In the seventh Savage landed a cracking right which buckled Reid and after clinching fell to the deck. The referee did not call it a knockdown but Reid was hurt badly and was punished by the ropes for the remainder of the round. Savage started the eighth well and it looked like Reid was on his way out but he fought back bravely and actually stunned Savage in the ninth with two big punches. Savage though soon came back and the final round consisted of both fighters just throwing constant leather at each other.

With the entire crowd standing on their feet at the final bell the referee correctly awarded the bout to Savage by a score of 97-94.
