Let's face it we all knew it was going to happen. WBA light welterweight champion
Amir Khan is avoiding his mandatory defense against the hard hitting Marcos Maidana
and instead opting to take on the smaller and older Juan Manuel Marquez according
to Golden Boy Promotions' Richard Schaefer.
"A fight against Marquez is a breakthrough as he is one of the best and Mexico's No 1 active fighter" said Schafer. "Once he wins against Marquez, there is the possibility of a fight against Zab Judah - and then Mayweather Jnr."
The fight will likely take place in Las Vegas and the date they are hoping to have this fight on is May 8th as HBO will be showing it along with the replay of Mosley v Mayweather from the week before.
If Khan beats Marquez then it's another name to add to his list alongside Marco Antonio Barrera. Maybe Khan is trying to emulate his sparring partner Manny Pacquiao by defeating these Mexican legends; only difference is when Pacquiao fought them they were still at the top of the sport and fighting at their natural weight.
They obviously want Khan to make a big impression in the US against Marquez who again will be fighting above his normal weight and will surely struggle against the bigger and quicker Khan although Freddie Roach's claims that Khan will beat Marquez more convincingly than Mayweather did are quite frankly laughable. Mayweather whitewashed Marquez in the biggest wipe out in Compubox history how could you possibly top that?
In his last fight Khan blew away Dimitriy Salita in the early stages of the first round but it's a big step up in class against Marquez despite the height and weight advantage for Khan.
Marquez will be trying to become the first Mexican fighter to win titles in four different weight classes should he beat Khan and might just be that one step further to getting his rubber match with pound for pound king Manny Pacquaio.
