After months of speculation (some from within Khan's own camp) that WBA World light
welterweight champion Amir Khan 22-1 (16) would vacate his crown rather than defend
against mandatory and interim champion Marcos Maidana 27-1 (26), it seems like the
bout will now go ahead.
The WBA today announced on their own website that the purse bids which were scheduled for today in Panama City have been cancelled after both camps reached an agreement. Some boxing sites have gone on record as saying that this bout will be on April 17th on the undercard to Roy Jones-Bernard Hopkins 2 but this has not yet been ratified.
It will be interesting to see what game plan Freddie Roach will look to rely on if this fight does take place as he has made it known that he sees Maidana as a very difficult opponent for his young charge. Maidana is very agricultural in the way he launches punches with big swings but as we all know Khan has not got the best chin in the world and Maidana does not have bad hand speed.
Khan has recently signed on with Oscar De LaHoya’s GBP promotions who will be the real winners no matter what as they also have options on Maidana.
