44 year old Bernard Hopkins entered his fight Wednesday night at the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, knowing his payday, a revenge match has fallen through as his March opponent Roy Jones Jr. suffered a first round ko at the hands of Danny Green down under in Australia. But the show must go on and this, originally a tuneup for the rematch with Jones, was still a fight he had to win. Good thing winning is what Hopkins does best!
Bernard Hopkins 50-5(32kos) did what he had to do to win an unanimous decision over Enrique Ornelas 29-6(19) over twelve rounds Wednesday night. Hopkins used his skills to outbox, outfight and even hold when he had to. In the end the scoring was as follows, judges: Robert Grasso 118-110, Steve Weisfeld 119-109 and judge Raul Caiz Jr. scored it 120-109.
Not a performance typical of Hopkins, but at his age and with the distractions from the night before in Australia, he did get the job done.
The undercard featured one of those "Youth titles" as the undefeated Danny Garcia impressively stopped Enrique Colin 23-5-3(19) in the second round of a light welterweight bout scheduled for 10. Garcia, now 15-0(10), dropped Colin hard at the end of the first round and finished him in the second. The time was :55 of round two.
Undefeated featherweight Derrick Wilson was upset by Guadalupe De Leon 8-9(4) via four round split decision. Wilson drops to 5-1-1(2) with the loss.
