Nonito Donaire 22-1 (14) is looking for a new opponent for his defence of his interim
(again!) WBA super flyweight title. His scheduled opponent Gerson Guerrero 34-8 (26)
failed his pre-fight eye exam and has been diagnosed with a detached retina.
As this was the scheduled main event of Latin Fury/Pinoy Power 3 pay-per-view card this Saturday, urgent calls have gone out to several possible substitute opponents. Brad Goodman, matchmaker for Top Rank has said that there are 2 fighters from Mexico who are possibly interested. One is Manuel Vargas 26-4-1 (11) and the other is Hugo Ruiz 22-1 (21).
It has since been reported that Vargas has been given the nod. Vargas has fought as high as flyweight but in his last bout dropped a split decision for the WBO minimum weight title!
Donaire is reportedly desperate to fight on Saturday and has said he is prepared
to fight an opponent from the higher bantamweight division if needed.
"I've always been prepared to fight anybody. I can adapt to any changes. I am ready for anything. Whoever they put in, I'm ready if Guerrero can't make it. So be it. As long as I get to fight, I am happy" said Donaire
Donaire is hoping that an impressive win earns him a lucrative rematch with Vic Darchinyan later this year. His win over Darchinyan back in 2007 was considered an upset at the time but the odds will surely be different this time.
It is a big fight as both fighters allegedly want it and Darchinyan currently holds both the WBC and WBA belts in this division.
