Zsolt Erdei 31-0 (17) has vacated his WBC cruiserweight title that he won in November.
Erdei’s promoters Universum informed the WBC by way of letter.
Erdei, who is now 35 years old, beat the Italian Giacobbe Fragomeni 26-2-1 (10) to win the crown by majority decision but only weighed in at 178 pounds for the bout, barely 3 pounds above the light heavyweight limit and potentially 22 pounds below bigger cruiserweight challengers. Add to that the fact that Erdei faded badly during the fight, then in hindsight it is not a surprising decision.
Erdei was the long term WBO light heavyweight champion prior to moving up and his crown was won by German Juergen Brahmer. Brahmer has just been sentenced to jail and so Erdei has a ready made title to fight for.
The WBC are thought to pair the number 1 and 2 contenders together for their cruiserweight crown. These are Krzysztof Wlodarczyk and former champion Fragomeni.
