In a battle of Juan Carlos versus Juan Carlos, it was the Burgos version that walked away with a win this Friday night, January 15th. JC Burgos ruled the Featherweight action all night long, utilizing his superior reach and stamina to soundly pummel the body of JC Martinez. For his part, Martinez did far better than expected and was certainly game. But with a record of 17 wins to 11 losses Martinez was never expected to win. He did what he had to for a payday, staying on his feet and trying to work inside on Burgos.

In fact, his biggest battle may have come before the fight since Martinez had to lose over 20 pounds just to get near fightweight. But eventually the younger Juan Carlos (aka Miniburgos) was simply too much of a match for the journeyman Juan Carlos. Burgos is the WBC #2 ranked Featherweight, and he was determined to show it with a stoppage win over his rugged challenger.

In the eleventh round the extended damage finally paid off with a big straight right down the pipe that was the beginning of the end for Martinez. Come the twelth round, Burgos battered Martinez with a powerful left hook that sent him staggering back against the ropes, exhausted. Three shots later and he sank to the ground. He did try to make it through the round though, and beat the count. But at 1:07 of round 12, Martinez's body had had enough, and a teeth rattling right hand from Burgos forced the TKO.

So in the end Juan Carlos won. It could never have been any other way. The 22 year old five foot, eight inch Burgos from Tijuana has now improved his record to 24-0 and succesfully defended his WBC Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) Featherweight Title.

In the undercard, former U.S. Olympian Demetrius Andrade knocked out his opponent Bernardo Gureca at 1:18 of the first round via counter right hook. Andrade remains undefeated at 9-0 at Jr. Middleweight.

Also Yaundale Evans won a unanimous decision against Gino Escamilla in a Jr. Lightweight fight. The bout went six rounds, but Evans scored a big knockdown in the second round and basically dominated the fight from then on out to earn a solid victory. Evans is now 5-0.
