German boxing badboy and current WBO light heavyweight champion Juergen Brahmer 35-2 (28) today received a 16 month jail term. This latest term behind bars may well signal the end of his career near the top level.

This current term is actually the third time that Brahmer has been sentenced to prison time. In 1998, Brahmer received a four year stretch for assault and in 2002 was awarded another two and a half year term, also for assault.

This trial was for two separate incidents. He was found guilty of punching a man in May 2008 and breaking a woman’s nose in September 2008.

According to some reports the innocent parties were prepared to settle out of court but the public prosecutor’s refused to drop the charges, citing public interest. What made it worse for Brahmer is that he was already on probation for previous charges at the time of the incidents.

Brahmer looked like he had lost his chance at becoming a World champion when he dropped a points decision to Hugo Garay for the WBA World crown in November 2008.

However he subsequently won the European crown and defended it before stopping Aleksy Kuziemski in 11 to win the interim version of the WBO light heavyweight title. With full champion Zsolt Erdei moving up to cruiserweight, Brahmer was awarded the full version and recently defended in a good fight against Dmitry Sukhotsky.

This writer would be pretty surprised if Brahmer is not now feeling pretty bad after climbing to the top of the sport before previous transgressions brought him back down.
